| A HISTORY OF TENNIS by Noel & Clark 1991
Five mint copies of the 1991 reprinted facsimile available at £150 each
A HISTORY OF TENNIS was published in 1924 in two volumes by the Oxford University Press in a run of 800 standard edition sets (in decorative dustjackets) and 20 de luxe presentation sets (in green boards with green leather corners etc.) Written by Evan Baillie Noel, and financed by James Oscar Max Clark, the book was originally published in a series of authoritative articles by Noel from The Field magazine. It did not sell well and by 1932, 348 sets had been pulped leaving the run at 452 sets only. This work is one of the top 10 books on Real Tennis in the quite sparse bibliography that stretches over 500 years. It is full of history, technique, records, description of the courts and top players etc. The original sets now fetch from £500 without dustjackets upto £2500 with dustjackets. I am able to offer 5 mint condition facsimile volumes of 587 pages in blue cloth boards still wrapped in original paper and boxes as when leaving the print shop. These were published by Duckworth in 1991, who also published a de luxe edition of 150 numbered volumes; 105 were subsequently pulped! The price is £150 per copy plus postage.
