This book was much heralded and when it came out in September 2009, it landed with a very loud bang. The whole book has been overshadowed by the Crytstal Meths story which has caused much disquiet in tennis circles. As there is an 8 years' statute of limits on retrospective disciplinary action on such matters, it looks as though it may be a dead issue. But his public image has been badly dented.
But leaving aside that issue, he was clearly one of the most gifted and entertaining tennis players of the last 20 years, and accumulated a very large public following. Who will forget the moment on Centre Court years ago (?1991) when he took off his tracksuit after the warm-up to reveal a pristine all-white kit?
His 1992 Wimbledon win against Goran Ivanisevic in 5 memorable sets was his once only Wimbledon triumph, though he gathered in a total of 8 Grand Slams including the Golden Slam which included the Olympic title. And he sealed a dream marriage by marrying Steffi Graf, herself a great Wimbledon champion.
The book is in hardboards and dust-wrapper with 388 pages, but with neither a chapter headings list nor an index. It is offered at £20 plus postage.
